This course will feature the work of modern Jewish and Israeli intellectuals who fall outside of the received Jewish/Israeli canon. They tentatively include Ammiel Alcalay, Hannah Arendt, Shimon Ballas, Daniel Boyarin, Hélèn Cixous, Jacques Derrida, Edmond Jabès, Hanoch Levin, Samir Naqqash, Avital Ronel, Ella Shohat, and Susan Sontag. I am interested in providing students the opportunity to explore the work of writers who have helped to define and shape public debates on what it means to be Jewish, Israeli, Zionist, or a Jew in both Israel and the diaspora.
