In this course, we will work toward developing your writing by focusing on literature in which animals -- often distinguished from human 'language users' speak. Through a series of formal essays (approximately 4-5 papers), reading journals, and class discussions, we will consider such questions as why an author might choose to use talking animals in a piece? What are our expectations are of such unusual speakers? How do these works of literature reveal changing attitudes about humanity's place in the world? The process of constructing a compelling thesis argument in any discipline begins with asking questions that interest and puzzle you; developing these arguments is one of the main objectives of the course. This course is intended to be a rigorous introduction into writing for the college setting. You will work towards composing clear, thoughtful, graceful essays on works from ancient fables to contemporary novels. Class workshops will provide the opportunity for you to work closely with your peers to improve the effectiveness of your written prose. Possible texts include: Aesop's Fables, The Golden Compass, Alice in Wonderland.
