This course focuses on the different ways in which reading and writing about literature can open up endless possibilities for critical thinking. Since this is a literature-based writing course, you will be producing primarily literary essays. The literary essay as a form is more flexible than you might believe, but it -- like any genre of writing -- has its own set of conventions and expectations. In addition to contributing to your success in this course, your mastery of these conventions can improve your writing in other contexts, and should prompt a consideration of how literary and indeed all types of writing are constructed, and just how complex meaning-making proves to be. Because I want you to challenge yourselves consistently to dig a little deeper into literary texts, ask more challenging questions, and interrogate the so-called obvious, I have assigned a reading list that -- in my opinion -- encourages you to do just that. You will note that these texts are, generically-speaking, 'mysteries'; the reason for this is that I have found that this genre in particular often invites the reader to engage more actively in the kinds of critical questions that often lead to a lifelong practice of reading closely and carefully, always engaged with the mysteries words and their slippery meanings present to us.
