Primary Instructor:

This section is for students who are interested in literature. The texts that we will be responding to and analyzing will be literary: the personal narrative, the novel, the short story, and the film, and in some way or another, will focus on the idea of exile, of being an outsider, of belonging or not belonging, and of isolation and longing. We will use the texts both as models for our own writing as well as material for in-depth analysis and argumentation. The primary goal of this course, though, is to help you learn to write clear, compelling, and sophisticated prose. In short, this course is designed to help you to learn to write well at the college level, regardless of your field of study. Each essay you will asked to write, at its core, will contain some form of rigorous argument and insightful analysis, whether a personal narrative essay, a close analysis, an argument about a text or group of texts, and so forth. We will be reading novels, short stories, essays, and poetry by writers such as Jeffrey Eugenides, Julie Orringer, Junot Diaz, Uwem Akpan, Mavis Gallant (from whom the course title was taken), David Bezmogis, Elwood Reid, Philip Roth, Lara Vapnyar, and Tryfon Tolides. The complete reading list will be announced at the beginning of the academic term, and the short stories, essays, and poems will be compiled in the coursepack, available at the beginning of fall academic term. We will also watch films that deal with the course's themes. The other books for the class will be Diana Hacker's A Pocket Style Manual (5th edition) and Woe Is I: The Grammarphobe's Guide to Better English in Plain English, by Patricia T. O'Conner. All texts will be available at Shaman Drum (311-315 South State St.; www.shamandrum.com) by the beginning of fall academic term. The coursepack will be available at Dollar Bill Copy, 611 Church Street, also at the beginning of the term.
