The primary goal of this course is to help you learn to write clear, convincing, and sophisticated prose. We will develop these skills through a wide range of methods: readings, discussions, writing exercises, and responses to other forms of media. Because writing is an organized way of thinking, our engagement with the subject matter will be focused primarily on issues of style, craft, and execution. By learning how something works, we can more fully understand why it works. I have named this class 'Aspects of Belonging' because we are each members of diverse and myriad communities. Whether it is our race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religious affiliation, regional background, or economic status, we understand the world and define ourselves in relation to the institutions and groups to which we belong. Yet ultimately, and perhaps most importantly, we are our own persons. Over the course of this academic term we will explore the ways in which individuals -- including ourselves -- negotiate the different and sometimes difficult responsibilities of culture, and the ways in which these investigations and questionings give rise to an authentic voice as writers, scholars, and citizens. To achieve this goal we will be reading novels, short stories, poetry, and essays that explore the theme of belonging from myriad angles'social, political, sexual, intellectual by writers such as Dean Bakopoulos, Philip Roth, Julie Orringer, Junot Diaz, Uwem Akpan, Jeffrey Eugenides, David Bezmogis, Tryfon Tolides, Elwood Reid, and Nora Ephron. We will also watch several films that deal with the course's themes. In addition to a coursepack and several full-length texts selected from the authors above, we will also be utilizing two books on style: Diana Hacker's A Pocket Style Manual (5th edition) and Woe Is I by Patricia T. O'Connor. This section is for students who are interested in literature. Through close reading, careful analysis, and thoughtful discussions you will not only develop stronger critical thinking and writing skills, but also add your voice to the literary and academic communities.
