The history of sexual pleasure is one of the body concealed, of forbidden desires of the flesh, upheld by both taboos and moral codes.

This course will analyze the european experience of sexual containment from the 16th century until the Victorian control of sex, parallel in both England and France between approximately 1800 and 1960.

It will conclude with a study of the sexual revolution of the 1960's, including the recognition of female sexual pleasure and the creation, in both Europe and the United States, of a new sexual pact between the individual and society.
