With fortunes to be made or lost, the desire to succeed on Wall Street has driven many to bend or break the law in pursuit of financial gain for over 200 years. With the collapse of Enron and WorldCom, issues of corporate responsibility and honesty have taken on a renewed seriousness that can only be understood in the context of American financial history. In order to develop this understanding, this class will be split into three main topics: American stock swindles and scams pre-1990, Wall Street scandals since 1990, and what corporate responsibility means in the post-Enron world. These topics will be explored via in-class discussion, weekly reading assignments, a short essay, and a final project. Reading list may include: Wall Street: A History: From Its Beginnings to the Fall of Enron Den of Thieves (selections) Current and archived readings from WSJ.com and NYTimes.com Film: The Smartest Guys in the Room
