Cancer treatment is currently a topic of interest in virtually all fields of research. The possibilities are nearly endless, ranging from several types of radiation therapy to monoclonal antibodies, cryosurgery, and gene therapy, among many others. This class will introduce briefly the classic treatment and detection methods and focus thoroughly on photodynamic therapy as well as detection using fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy. Emphasis will be placed on the science underlying these novel methods. Attendance, class participation, and weekly reading assignments are mandatory. Class time will be spent discussing and expanding upon the assigned journal articles or book excerpts. Students will give a presentation at the end of the course after investigating a recent development in cancer treatment or detection that was not discussed in class.
