The focus of this course is an exploratory, experimental approach to fiber sculpture. Students learn and employ traditional techniques (including basketry, plaiting, tapestry, surface design, and felt-making) and also are encouraged to develop their own experimental techniques. Traditional fibers such as wool, linen, and cotton are be combined with unconventional plastics, wire, paper, etc., in the creation of innovative works. Slide lectures of historic and contemporary textiles, discussions, critiques, and studio projects help students develop a knowledge and appreciation of the discipline.
