The first-term, first-year student faces a very new and unfamiliar life at this University. The considerable academic challenges are complicated by students’ unfamiliarity with the people, the campus, and the activities that the University community provides. Moreover, University of Michigan life is embodied by a sophisticated engagement with language, the exchange of opinions, and the argument of inquiry with which academic discovery is carried out. This writing practicum will undertake an investigation into University life and the language that characterizes it by regular and disciplined examination of the primary organ of campus life, The Michigan Daily. We will read the paper every day, drawing on it for particular lessons for each class period, among them exercises in argumentative writing in the various ways a newspaper incorporates it: opinion essays, review essays, and letters to the editor. But the Daily also contains a variety of straight expository writing as students report on the important events that occur on campus. In this way our class will be invited to choose interesting events (including sports, lectures, and administrative operations), attend them, and write about them, intending to bring the event to life for someone who, perhaps, could not attend it, but also to bring a reflective insight for those who could.
