Primary Instructor:

In this class we'll practice writing essays for the college environment. We will work on writing clear thesis statements, organizing complex ideas, transitioning from one topic to the next, citing sources, grammar issues, providing evidence to back-up claims, and approaching arguments from new and interesting points of view. No matter your academic interests, this class will help you become a better writer. We will read model essays and work in groups to improve writing. Good attendance, careful reading skills and a willingness to work on improving writing skills are a must for this course.

Readings and class discussion topics are often political. We will discuss and analyze a variety of current events and social issues, from the presidential candidates to international health policy. In addition, we’ll work on a short letter to the editor. There is room in several assignments for you to work on a topic in which you are particularly interested, or that aligns with your prospective major.

Students will write and revise four essays, which will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis. Attendance at all classes and meetings with the instructor is mandatory.

Required texts include a coursepack, available from Dollar Bill on Church Street after the first day of class, and the latest edition if the handbook Rules for Writers by Diana Hacker.

Each student will have a 30-minute one-on-one meeting with the instructor every other week. This individual attention is especially helpful when making the transition to college-level writing.
