Writing Practicum is a non-graded, credit/no-credit course designed to help you become a more confident and skilled writer. Successful completion of the course will also prepare you to meet the demands of ENGLISH 124/125 and other university courses.

This course offers a basic introduction to academic writing. You will practice organizing, developing, and supporting ideas, analyzing complex materials, and supporting claims with examples and evidence. Peer review and class discussion are key components of the class. Each student will meet individually with me six times during the semester to discuss his or her specific writing questions. Course assignments emphasize the value of revision and the importance of distinguishing between one's own ideas and those of others. We will also pay close attention to matters of grammar and style.

This class is run as a workshop and seminar, i.e., class time generally focuses around discussion of readings and relevant issues, presentations and discussion led by class members, and work-shopping of exercises and assignments. You will be expected to complete work outside of class times, including assigned readings and papers.

Assignments will include four shorter papers of observation, description, and narration, and one longer paper, based on one of the shorter papers, incorporating more in-depth research.
