Writing Practicum is an ungraded course designed to strengthen students's analytical writing, critical thinking skills, and confidence in their writing. To accomplish these goals, we will focus on writing as a process. Our first step will include deepening our engagement with the texts we read to build complex responses to them both in discussion and in writing. The readings, and thus our writing, will concern how language forms, alters, and expands identity, who determines the limits and uses of a culture's dominant language, and what the components of a writing voice are. The coursepack includes writing by Orwell, Didion, Anzaldu´a, Hong Kingston, Kakutani, and Sedaris.

Because this is a writing course, student generated writing will be one of our primary texts. Students will pre-write, draft, (re)organize, and revise three essays that engage the questions raised in the readings and class discussions. In-class workshops and one-on-one tutorials with the instructor every other week will help prepare students to revise their essays for the final portfolio due at the end of the semester.

Required Texts

  • Coursepack available at Dollar Bill Copying, 611 Church Street
  • College level portable dictionary
  • Rules for Writers, sixth edition, by Diana Hacker available at Shaman Drum
