This course is designed to practice the essentials of college essay writing. Our goal is to improve your ability to write clear, well-organized, cohesive essays and to improve your skills as both interpreters and communicators of ideas and information. We’ll take time to focus on basic units of writing, the sentence and the paragraph, as well as key steps in the writing process from drafting, organizing, and clarifying to the vital role of revision. This course will help you develop confidence as writers able to communicate in an academic community. Our weekly readings will provide the backdrop for discussion and paper topics, and active participation in class discussions will model critical thought processes essential to writing good essays. We will concentrate on connecting reading and writing in this course, since improving your reading comprehension and analytical skills will contribute to your growth as a writer. You will be required to write four short (3-4page) papers over the term from which you will choose three papers to expand and revise for your final class portfolio. The final portfolio will total 15 revised pages and include a short reflective analysis on your writing over the term. Along with the final portfolio, short written responses, regular class attendance, and bi-weekly half-hour individual conferences to discuss your writing are required to earn credit.
