This course is an introduction to the sociological study of gender that focuses on how gender is embedded in social life. At the individual level, gender is an essential aspect of personhood and personal experience; at the institutional level, gender is a major way that societies differentiate their members. At both the individual and institutional levels, gender intersects with race, class, and sexuality to structure identities, rights, privileges, and opportunities. The course is organized around investigation of the heteronormative North American binary gender order. Specific topics of study include gender identity, how children and adults "become" gendered and "do" their gender(s), gender and sport, gender and desire, transgenderism, and intersexuality.
