In this course we will explore a number of contemporary challenges facing childbearing women and their health care providers today. Using biomedical and midwifery literature as a framework for the issues, we will focus on contested areas that confront childbearing women, particulary in the last 10-15 years. Using that background, we will focus specifically on topics of elective Cesarean delivery, home or hospital birth, midwife or physician and the promotion of "normal" birth which are also addressed in anthropological, sociological and feminist literature regarding childbirth. The course will explore these contested areas and others in readings, discussions and presentations with the goal of understanding the varied perspectives that women and health care providers draw upon when considering choices and options in childbirth. It is also intended to bridge the gap that often exists between what is "known" by health care providers and experienced by childbearing women and their families. Students interested in women's health care careers are encouraged to consider this opportunity to have a course that "meets with" graduate midwifery students. There is the additional option attending a Doula training weekend for an extra credit.
