This course is intended for students who have taken at least three semesters of Indonesian courses or other equivalent Indonesian language training proven by the department’s placement test. The objective of this course is to improve the students’ communicative skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This shall be done through the discussion of reading materials from the textbooks and/or other authentic materials from newspapers, magazines, as well as audio visual materials. The class activities include, but are not limited to, listening and speaking practices through dialogues in the textbook, reading discussion, writing, and presentations, as well as discussion of grammatical items encountered in the materials and activities. At the end of the course, students should be able to (1) communicate their ideas and opinions on selected issues with controlled grammar and intermediate level vocabularies and expressions, (2) write short essays expressing their ideas and opinion on the selected issues (from the reading and/or audio visual materials), and (3) do interviews in Indonesian without leaving the socio-cultural aspects of the Indonesian language. Evaluation is based on classroom performance, homework assignments, tests, a final exam, and a final paper.
