This course introduces the comparative and international politics of sub-Saharan Africa since independence, with a focus on the post-Cold-War period. Themes include the challenges of peace, democracy, and development — along with South Africa's political transition and its regional implications. Competing analytical perspectives on the diverse trajectories of change in the region are discussed. A central aim is to equip students to think critically about journalistic and scholarly depictions of politics in Africa.
