Why do people fight wars? What impact do they have on society? These are the central questions that we will be exploring in this course. Given the centrality of conflict to Greek and Roman civilization, it is no accident that the greatest historians of the ancient world were all historians of war, in taking this course we will have a chance to explore these questions with the aid of some of the greatest minds of the ancient world, and we will encounter some of its most memorable figures, from the crafty Themistocles to Alexander the Great, Hannibal and Julius Caesar.
