"I think a lot of us feel torn between multiple identities: am I this, am I that? The truth is we're often made up of these competing influences. But that's not the shorthand that society works in."
— Peter Ho Davies, in an interview with The Observer

What does it mean for Peter Ho Davies, of Chinese and Welsh descent, to write about "Welshness," or about Chinese characters? What about Jhumpa Lahiri writing stories on the Indian-American experience; or for Junot Díaz, the Dominican-American one?

This course will explore the responsibility, if indeed any, of immigrant and minority authors to write about "representative" issues, through selected short fiction by Davies, Lahiri, Díaz and others. Class meetings will involve reading and unpacking the texts, but also weave in applicable literary and social theory (including material on Third World literature and the model minority).
