What happens when a technological advancement is placed in the middle of an African village? Does western biomedicine coincide or clash with holistic and alternative forms of medicine? How have our own perspectives of health changed in the last 300 years?

In this one credit course we will look at various perspectives of health and how they have changed over time and space. Different views about what constitutes good health and what defines illness affect treatment of disease and how diseased persons are perceived within a society. This course will focus on different biomedical frameworks from the United States to Sweden to Brazil to Africa and examine how different cultural values create differences in health systems and health behavior/treatment.

Each week one or two journal articles or ethnographic excerpts will be discussed as well as a short presentation by a student on a recent media perspective of international public health. Grades will be based on attendance, participation and student presentations. No background in public health or medical anthropology is needed but only an interest in learning more about how culture helps shape medicine and health.
