This course examines twenty-three of the wealthiest democracies in the world, seeking to understand both the rules that govern the democratic political game in those nations, and also how that political game is ultimately played. We will learn that institutional rules may affect a person’s political behavior, but those rules do not often determine behavior. The course also seeks to understand the mechanisms through which the political process affects citizens and vice versa. It focuses more on cause-and-effect relationships between broad political and social forces than on great statesmen and stateswomen.
