Topics reviewed will include: efforts to systematically describe and understand psychological distress; the challenge of developing a useful system for classifying kinds of psychopathology; the process of empirical validation of supposed disorders; and the problem of conceptualizing psychological distress across cultures. In addition, students will become familiar with the role and significance of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, including several prevalent DSM disorders and their diagnostic criteria.

This course will consist of both lectures and discussion sections that elucidate and extend material treated in the textbook. Student evaluation will depend upon performance on assigned papers, quizzes, and exams.
