Primary Instructor:

Abandoned or neglected children on the streets of cities like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo have been the focus of recent international attention through films like Hector Babenco's Pixote: A Lei do Mais Fraco and José Padilha's Ônibus 174. This course will trace the history of representations of street children in Brazil and examine how the subject has appeared in literature, drama, and film from the nineteenth century through today. We will discuss how the issue intersects with historical phenomena such as slavery, abolition, and the military dictatorship — and how abandoned children have repeatedly been the focus of larger debates on democracy and citizenship. In addition to films by Babenco and Padilha, we will be reading authors such as Machado de Assis, Jorge Amado and Plínio Marcos.
