Primary Instructor:

This course examines computer and video games as a culturally relevant form of moving images, as a growing entertainment industry, and as a technology that presents us with new forms of interactivity and play. We will learn about game aesthetics, genres, and history. We will compare video games to other moving images, especially films and television. We will discuss the role of identity in games and the game industry and the current debates about video game violence. In doing so, we will develop a thorough understanding of the roles played by video and computer games in our contemporary culture and technology industries. This course is not a fan-based course but a serious intellectual interrogation of the video game medium as an entertainment industry and aesthetic form. It is not the intention of the course to determine what games are best or worst or personal favorites of course members, we will instead seek to understand the cultural, theoretical and industrial implications of video games are a major new media form.
