Sociology is not just an academic pursuit; it is a whole way of seeing and thinking about the world. A sociological insight is not something that only a sociologist can appreciate. It is a thought or idea that stems from a broad and coherent sensibility about human life. What defines a sociological perspective more than anything else is the conviction that people are not simply individuals who always and everywhere act to maximize their personal utility but also act in myriad ways that reflect their belonging to social groups. This course is meant to introduce you to sociology as both a field of scholarship and a mode of inquiry. It is designed not only to acquaint you with a specialized body of academic knowledge but also to cultivate your ability to reason sociologically. Unit I surveys classic works in social theory and reviews the methods commonly used by sociologists to gather and analyze data about the empirical world. Unit II examines core areas of empirical research in sociology. Topics include education, gender, social inequality, urban poverty. There is no textbook. The required readings include book chapters and journal articles.
