This course explores mostly 20th-century Anglo-American women's literature from the perspective of the various debates about gender in literary criticism. To what extent do these writers replicate, challenge, and negotiate gendered expectations? How is femininity/masculinity scripted in these works, and tied to race, class, and sexual preference? Discussing course works in light of social practice, literary convention, and historical circumstance (for instance, specific laws), students read and respond to works such as Kate Chopin's The Awakening, Nella Larsen's Passing, Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar, and Sandra Cisneros's The House on Mango Street.

The class also creates its own anthology of women's poetry, as students (in pairs) introduce woman poets to the class. In addition to the poetry report, students keep a weekly journal of responses to class readings, write two (six-page) analytical papers, and take a final exam. Course reading may also include a Xeroxed packet of related readings, available at Excel (estimated cost @$10).
