This section of ENGLISH 124 is designed to improve your ability to write clear, organized, engaged essays and to aid your development as a critical interpreter of texts and culture. We will explore the ways that culture/s and society/ies are constructed, particularly through and with American literature, and so we will spend time analyzing both “American” texts as well as the ways they are presented and marketed. We will discuss various ways that “literature” and “American culture” are defined, and we will come up with our own definitions as we explore them. This course will help you continue to develop as critical readers, thinkers, and writers able to communicate in cultural and academic communities. Throughout the course of the academic term, you will write 5 short response papers and several in-class freewrites.  You will complete two longer individual projects, one of which will be a written paper, and the other which will involve multiple textual media of your choice.  Your final project will be a group project with a few of your peers.

Our texts will include: the Heath Anthology of American Literature, Sixth Edition, Volume A, and the Norton Anthology of American Literature, Seventh Edition, Volume E, as well as a coursepack that will be available at Dollar Bill copying the week before classes begin.  You will also need to purchase a small journal-type book in which you can record your freewriting for class.
