This lecture course surveys the history of people of African descent in the United States from their origins through the end of the Civil War. It explores major themes, events, trends, and changes in the lives of African Americans, beginning in West Africa, following captive Africans across the Atlantic, and then traces the contours of the Black struggle for freedom and dignity. Topics to be examined include the making of African-American culture, enslavement and slave resistance, free Blacks both within and outside the slave states, African-American political organizing and community building, and the transformative role of African Americans in the Civil War. Readings feature a good deal of primary source material (including examples of firsthand Black testimony as well as other documentary evidence) and the work of contemporary cultural and social historians. There will be two in-class exams, a comprehensive final, and at least one critical essay assignment.
