We will examine several first-hand accounts of exploration in order to better understand the human desire to expand and discover. This will include excerpts from the writings of Marco Polo, David Livingstone, Ernest Shackleton, Mary Kingsley, and Sir Edmund Hillary, to name just a few. Some of the questions we might consider are:

  • How are the practices of exploration and conquest related? Are they interchangeable concepts?
  • Does an explorer have to possess a certain amount of 'machismo' or arrogance, or is it enough to simply be curious about the world?
  • What pressure does the explorer put on his/her companions and family? What agency do other explorers/relatives appear to have in the first-hand accounts we are reading?
  • How do most explorers deal with the exploits of earlier expeditions? Is there a greater push to replicate or to overcome/surpass earlier achievements?
Most importantly, this seminar is designed to be an entertaining and intellectually stimulating introduction to college, so course work will only consist of weekly paragraph responses and an enjoyable amount of reading.

Class meets: Sept. 16, 23, 30, Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28, Nov. 4
