As previously science-fiction-like technologies become more and more mainstream, humans are “playing God” more literally than ever before. Many of the fruits of these technologies are considered wonderful for those receiving the benefits, which is of course the intent. But geneticists are unraveling more and more of what makes us who we are, and finding that a startling amount of who we are does indeed lie in our genes. And the technologies we are using now to save lives are only steps away from offering parents the chance to “design” their offspring, even down to details like intelligence and emotional tendencies, or so they say. If this is really true, are we on the verge of a “better” human race? Are we really about to take control of our own evolution, so to speak?

This class is meant to be a springboard for learning and discussion about where science has taken us and where we want it to take us. It is not aimed at promoting any particular viewpoint!
