MCDB 401 - Advanced Topics in Biology
Section: 001 Cell Biology and Disease
Term: FA 2009
Subject: Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCDB)
Department: LSA Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology
Requirements & Distribution:
Waitlist Capacity:
Advisory Prerequisites:
CMB senior concentrators or Graduate standing. Prerequisites will be set by the instructor as appropriate for each section.
This course counts toward the 60 credits of math/science required for a Bachelor of Science degree.
May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credit(s).
Primary Instructor:

This course will extend the basic knowledge of molecular cell biology in cellular disorders in human diseases. The course will be comprised of lectures, in-class discussions, paper readings, and presentations. It is appropriate for students interested in cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, and genetics. Selected topics on human diseases in which basic cell biological processes are defective will be explored in-depth using contemporary primary cell biology literature as the principal resource. An emphasis will be placed on the analysis of experimental design, methodology, and interpretation of data. Basic principles will be reinforced in lectures. Topics of investigation will include, but are not limited to, cellular defects in protein folding, targeting, and processing in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease; cell growth, cancer, and programmed cell death; cholesterol metabolism and atherosclerosis; insulin processing, secretion, and diabetes; and pathogen-cell interaction. This course is intended for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students.

Syllabus and PDF files of the papers required for reading will be posted on the CTools website. Students will be expected to download and print their own copies. Grades will be based upon performance on exams, discussions, and presentations of research papers.

Prerequisite: This course is intended for students who have completed MCDB 310 or CHEM 415. MCDB 428 (Cell Biology) is recommended, or graduate standing.
