AAPTIS 489 and relevant language experience.

Primary Instructor:

This course develops students' ability to speak, listen, read, and write to an advanced level in Uzbek. The spoken language of educated native speakers, as well as the contemporary literary language as reflected in newspapers and journals, will be emphasized throughout. This course will stress extensive practice in conversation, listening, reading, and writing, and English will kept to a minimum. Students will be able to read texts of growing complexity, and to carry on conversations with native speakers.

Course Requirements: Regular written and oral exercises, occasional quizzes, and midterm/final exams with written and oral components. No term paper or research essay.

Intended Audience: Undergraduates who have taken the introductory survey of the region and want to develop the linguistic skills to continue their studies and graduate students preparing for fieldwork in Central Asia.

Class Format: These are not independent studies, but entail 4 hours per week of class time with instructor (3 hours per week for graduate students). Section 001 is the graduate section; section 002 is the undergraduate section.

Classes begin M Jan 11; MLK Holiday Jan 18; Spring Recess Mar 13-21; Last Day of Class April 30; Final Exam 8-10am, Wednesday, May 5. NB: Students in the class should confirm the time and date for the final exam with the instructor.
