This class will examine the intersection of stardom and ethnicity in Hollywood cinema from the 1920s to the present. By beginning with an overview of key methodologies and approaches to stardom and celebrity, the course will provide students with a number of strategies by which to analyze the potential meanings of Hollywood stars and their careers. The course will then proceed as a series of case studies of individual stars, from Dolores del Rio and Rita Hayworth during the Classical Hollywood period, to more contemporary figures like Jennifer Lopez. Throughout, the course will consider their personas in relation to industry trends, press discourse, film narratives, genre and socio-historic context. Ultimately, the course will consider the way ethnicity is mobilized and/or negotiated relative to these individuals, and provide an overview of the way race and ethnicity have been theorized by Hollywood.
