This is an interdisciplinary seminar that explores important trends and debates in feminist theory. We will read scholars from various intellectual traditions — postcolonial, transnational, women of color, lesbian feminism, and women's liberation. We will learn in the process how to theorize gender/sexuality, race, and class so that we may understand and challenge the differences constituted between women and men and, as importantly, those among women. You can expect to encounter various critical paradigms — Marxist, poststructuralist, psychoanalytic, queer, anti-colonial, third world, standpoint — each of which theorizes these differences, and which we will learn to use in our own critiques.

This is an introductory survey course that does not assume prior familiarity with feminist theory. We will nonetheless move at a brisk pace through different areas of feminist thought, with each week introducing new texts, ideas, and methods of critique that will be drawn on in subsequent weeks. It is thus important to come prepared to discuss texts intensively in class. Buying the coursepack and reading ahead of schedule are highly recommended.
