This course explores the historical and linguistic connections between Gullah, Sierra Leone Creole, African American English and a set of Creole languages in both Africa and the Caribbean. These include the Upper Guinea Creoles, the Gulf of Guinea Creoles in Africa and Papiamentu, Haitian and Jamaican in the Caribbean. The course examines the displacement of slave populations as they went through a triangular journey between Africa, the United-States and the Caribbean. We analyze the languages that emerged from the contact between Europeans and Africans from three different angles. We study the socio-historical context of their genesis, their status as minority languages, their struggles in becoming officialized and being used as languages of instruction. Finally, we address the multifaceted benefits of fieldwork. We focus specifically on how fieldwork projects and linguistic database development can help resolve some of the issues facing creoles, through the creation of accurate linguistic descriptions and the promotion of their visibility and legitimacy. The format of this class is a mix of lecture and class discussions, using on occasions materials from documentaries (The Language You Cry In), as well as video and audio-clips. There will be four quizzes in addition to mid-term and final exams.
