Have you ever wondered about the origins of success? Why some people rise to the top of their field, while others founder at the bottom? Why some images, ideas, and fashions ‘go viral’ while others languish in obscurity? This seminar complicates conventional success stories by accounting for influential, though less-visible, factors coming to bear on instances of triumph or achievement. We will map these “agents of success” in our writing and in our discussions, creating a web-based portfolio of text, images, and sounds that illustrate the ways in which success (and failure) operate within a historical network of people and things. Though our theme will organize and inform our efforts throughout the academic term, the main purpose of this course is to help you become better readers and writers.  To these ends, we will discuss various stages of the writing process, including invention, arrangement, drafting, revision, and editing, as well as the appropriate uses of evidence and citation, and consider the ways in which a writer’s intended (or anticipated) audience shapes composition.
