Primary Instructor:

This writing course focuses on the creation of complex, analytic arguments that matter in academic contexts.  Students work closely with their peers and the instructor to develop their written prose.  Readings cover a variety of different genres, with academic disciplines.

In other words, the main goal of this course is to help students, no matter their major, in the art of writing clear, well-supported papers.  Better writing starts with better reading so we’ll be reading, questioning, and breaking apart essays from a large pool of writers to figure out how they work.  The readings are also meant to serve as springboards for students to write similar essays or to be used as evidence in larger, more analytical papers.  In addition to the major essays, students will be writing constantly, in the form of daily assignments, reading responses, and critique letters.  By the end of the academic term, students should have the skills to produce solid academic writing in their future college courses.

Required texts:

The Writer's Presence, 6th Edition by Donald McQuade and Robert Atwan
