Four countries whose combined size is smaller than Washtenaw County — Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco and San Marino — continue to exist in Europe despite numerous obstacles. How on a continent composed today mostly of large powerful countries, do these tiny countries continue to exist? Students will examine political and legal aspects of statehood, autonomy and sovereignty. We will also look at how mainstream culture regards these “accidents of history” through Family Guy, movies such as The Mouse that Roared, and these countries’ national sports teams.
