  • How do children cope with illness?
  • What happens when a child develops a serious medical condition, or is forced to deal with the onset of illness in a family member or friend?

In this course, we will explore the psychological and social effects of illness upon children at various developmental stages. We will rely heavily upon both pop culture sources and academic literature to ground our exploration of the various ways in which children process, understand, and ultimately come to terms with sickness and death.

Tentative topics for further exploration will be based upon class interest, but are likely to include:

  • the role of technology (blogs, facebook) in creating effective and ineffective coping strategies,
  • the role of hospitals, schools, and religious institutions in terms of coping, and
  • the ability of children’s literature and popular movies to explain or confound realistic illness situations.

In addition to active class participation, students should be prepared to complete several short responses to class material and a creative final project on a topic of particular interest.
