This course traces the evolution of Claude Debussy's musical style and aesthetics against the background of the cultural, musical and artistic context of his period.  It will successively examine his most important works and then go on to compare them with those of his major contemporaries, including Fauré, Satie, and Ravel. There will be weekly lectures, reading and discussions as well as research presentations and a midterm and final exam. Graduate students elect MUSICOL 505.
