In this post-proficiency Readings class, taught exclusively in German, we will examine Berlin's cultural and literary history from the 19th century to the present. As capital of the Hohenzollern monarchy, Weimar Republic, Third Reich, German Democratic Republic and unified Germany, Berlin has played a central role in German and European culture. It has provided a stage for social movements, experimentation in literature and the arts, ideological demagoguery and division, multicultural coexistence, youth and countercultures, innovative urban planning and a self-conscious coming-to-terms-with-the-past. We will examine its many incarnations through readings in literature and nonfiction, the visual arts and film.
