This section is designed to provide a unique opportunity for U-M students to gain experience working on educational outreach programs through the University of Michigan Center for Educational Outreach (CEO). The purpose of the CEO outreach programs is to expose K-12 students, particularly those from underserved populations, to the opportunities made available to them through higher education, to educate them about the college-going process, and to prepare them for their journey toward the achievement of a college degree.

Students enrolled this section will provide support to K-12 students in various settings in southeast Michigan through after school tutoring, mentoring, study skills enhancement, advising on a college preparatory curriculum, as well as presenting a comprehensive curriculum of college awareness and information. Students may also participate in U-M campus visits, college awareness programs for parents, and other special activities. Students will focus on instilling in the K-12 students the importance of a college education, the opportunities a college education can provide and, most importantly, the belief that a college education is absolutely an achievable goal. Students will receive training on working effectively with youth in an educational setting and will be challenged to consider how programs can be designed and implemented to eliminate barriers to higher education among underserved populations.

The CEO offers a variety of outreach opportunities available through Project Community including the following:

  • College Corps — A partnership with the student organization Maximizing Academic Success (MAS) that serves Monroe Public Schools’ students in an afterschool tutoring & mentoring program on Tuesdays & Thursdays from approximately 1-5PM including drive time.

  • Rising Scholars — A program in partnership with Ann Arbor Public Schools that serves all three high schools’ students in a 7th hour academic course and/or an afterschool tutoring/mentoring program Monday – Friday afternoons (Approximately 1:30 – 4PM with a flexible schedule).

  • Student Speakers Bureau — Attend school visits with CEO Outreach Coordinators to speak with students about your college experience, facilitate workshops on college knowledge information, and serve as a resource on all things college-related for youth. (Approximately 1 visit per week for 3-4 hours each, flexible schedule.)

Students enrolled in SOC 389 are responsible for regular attendance in a weekly seminar on Mondays from 4:00 – 5:30PM. as well as participation at a designated community service site each week for approximately 3-4 hours per week, including drive time. In addition, students will complete weekly readings and reflective journal assignments, a midterm assignment, and a final paper/project.Students enrolled in Project Community who have valid driver’s licenses are able to check out vehicles through the Ginsberg Center in order to transport themselves to site. Carpooling among students in the same section is encouraged. Transportation is coordinated through the section facilitator and the Ginsberg Transportation Coordinator.

NOTE: Participation in this section is by override-only. Students interested in enrolling should email Amy Prevo, Assistant Director for the Center for Educational Outreach, at aprevo@umich.edu, or call her at 734-764-1452. Students will be asked to complete a short application. If the section is a fit, an override will be processed, giving student permission to enroll in the section.
