Perhaps a better name for this course would have been “American Poetry in the First Decade of the Third Millennium,” but obviously such a title sounds too long and to some degree seems oblivious to what transpired in that decade. An equally bad title would have been “American Poetry and 911.” Such a title may suggest that as far as American politics, culture, and the politics of culture and the culture of politics, the events of 911 were of tremendous import to how Americans perceived their nation and their role in the world. But to assume that American poetry since that time had devoted much time to those events or to their outcomes, would be an exaggeration. Nine-eleven serves as a marker, albeit a clichéd one, of how the American world has changed, and how in many ways it has not. Our sense of the esthetic, cultural, and political developments in the U.S. in this decade will be the poetry produced in it, and how the poets and poetic movements in the past 10-15 years have perhaps envisioned the world that we have come to inherit and how they have chronicled it since the new millennium began. Among the poets we will be studying are Robert Hass, Patricia Smith, David Wojahn, Lawrence Joseph, Naomi Shihab Nye, Illya Kaminsky, Dean Young, Claudia Rankine and Claudia Emerson, among others. We will also examine the anthologies, American Poets in the 21st Century: The New Poetics (Rankine and Sewell, editors); Lyric Postmodernisms: An Anthology of Contemporary Innovative Poetries, (Reginald Shepherd, editor) and Legitimate Dangers: American Poets of the New Century (Dumains & Marvin, editors)

Since this is an intensive writing course, students will be asked write a series of short review papers for each the books assigned, a short essay, and a long final essay, for a total of 40 pages.
