PSYCH 307 gives students the opportunity for direct interaction with young children and their teachers through classroom placements in an early childhood education and care setting with infants, toddlers, preschoolers or kindergarteners. Students are assigned to a specific classroom and group of children and participate under the direct supervision of the classroom teachers and directors of the University of Michigan Children's Center (400 N. Ingalls) or Towsley Children's House (2800 Plymouth Rd.). Students are asked to complete PSYCH 250 prior to enrollment in PSYCH 307, however they can be taken concurrently.

The seminar component of the course along with written assignments provide the opportunity to reflect on classroom experiences in relation to readings from the text: Annual Editions: Early Childhood Education 08-09 Editor: Karen Paciorek. Students are required to read the Center Handbook for information on Center policies and to complete State of Michigan Child Care Licensing Rules required clearances (i.e., complete a criminal history check and Department of Human Services Central Registry Clearance, have a physical exam from a doctor stating that there is no reason why they cannot work with young children and provide evidence of a negative TB test). Placements are scheduled in four hour blocks (a.m. or p.m.) five days per week (M-F).
