First Year Urdu I is an introductory proficiency-based course which allows students to acquire linguistic skills in culturally authentic contexts. The course concentrates on developing skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension. Standard text materials, audio-visual clips from films, and graded conversation prepared by the instructor are used with equal emphasis on spoken and written Urdu. Training in spoken Urdu emphasizes speaking and listening at a normal speed with near-native pronunciation intonation. Grading is based on attendance, class participation, written homework assignments, dictations, and quizzes/tests. No prior knowledge of Urdu is required.
