This lecture and discussion course covers the fundamentals of evolutionary biology with a focus on living organisms. It includes a historical survey of the development of evolutionary theory and critical examination of phylogenetic systematics, natural selection, population genetics, molecular evolution, microevolution, and macroevolution. Three exams will test students' knowledge of the concepts presented in lectures and reading materials. Weekly discussions will focus on primary literature. Short writing assignment(s) and a presentation based on readings from the primary scientific literature will be required. A term paper covering a topic in evolutionary biology is also required.
