This course counts toward the 60 credits of math/science required for a Bachelor of Science degree.
May not be repeated for credit.
Primary Instructor:

Systems-level programming techniques and concepts for the design of software systems: computer memory model; pointer safety; concurrent programming using threads; coding vulnerabilities and secure coding; network programming and remote procedure calls; readinglwriting objects to disk; client-server and distributed systems.

No C++ background assumed. Programming labs in C++.

Textbook: Following are potential choices:

  • H.M. Deitel and P.J. Deitel. C++. How to Program, 4/e.
  • K. Haviland, M. Gray, and B. Salama. Unix Systems Programming, 2nd Edition.


  • Week 1: Introduction. Why learn C++? C++ versus Java and Python.
  • Week 2 & 3: C ++ language overview.
  • Week 4 & 5: Memory model, pointers, arrays, and pointer safety.
  • Week 6: File I/O. Type casting. Object reading'writing.
  • Week 7-10: Introduction to concurrent programming
  • Week 11-14: Network programming and client-server computing


  • Projects: 45%
  • Midterm and final: 50%
  • Class participation: 10%
