This writing course focuses on the creation of complex, analytic, and well-supported arguments that matter in academic contexts. We will be using the figure of the detective — whether employed by the police force or working independently, vigilante-style — as the focus of the course. As they investigate, argue, and then prove their cases, so shall we. The primary materials of our class will be diverse in content and medium, ranging from "classic" detectives (Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie's Miss Marple) to today's pop-culture television sleuths (Castle, Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency). The analytical and argumentative skills we will develop over the course of the academic term will then be broadly applicable and not dependent on any one medium.
