This writing course focuses on the creation of complex, analytic, and well-supported arguments using contemporary American dystopian literature.  This class will specifically use utopian/dystopian fiction to help structure your learning process by foregrounding the debates that drove the creation of each society.  In turn, our close readings will provide a space for discussing what makes a successful argument work both in creative and non-fiction.  The class will work together to develop a variety of tools to use while writing in a variety of contexts, and students will be expected to complete five projects in addition to completing daily journal entries.  Readings will include fiction by authors such as Ursula Le Guin, Harlan Ellison, and Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.  Required books are They Say I Say, 2nd edition, by Gerald Graff, V for Vendetta by Alan Moore, and The Lucky Strike,  2009, PM Outspoken Authors Edition, by Kim Stanley Robinson.
